Should Your Hearing Aid Have Lots of Settings to Choose From?
Hearing aids now come with the option for multiple hearing aid programmes to be added or even much more than that if you use a smart phone. A hearing aid that connects to a hearing aid app gives you a whole new world of possibilties but is it always a good idea to have so much choice? Here we look at reasons you may want to keep your hearing aid as simple and easy to use as possible.
You are new to wearing a hearing aid
It can feel quite overwheming when you get your first hearing aid, how do you put it in? how long do the batteries last? Is it easy to clean? Do I wear it all day? You'll have lots of questions and it will be a bit of a journey getting used to the new changes of wearing a hearing aid. Therefore in the beginning the easier your hearing aid is the better. This means you won't accidentely change it on to a setting you don't know and it will feel easier to learn and easier to manage. Extra programs can always be added once you feel more comfortable and confident with your hearing aid.
Poor dexterity
Having poor dexertiy and movement of your hands and fingers will make being nibble to change between settings and features on your hearing aid much more fiddly. Discuss you needs with your hearing aid provider and look to see if any of the options you would like on the hearing aid can be made fairly automatic so that you don't need to touch your hearing aid very much at all once it is in.
You have memory difficulties
Lots of different program options can get quite confusing and therefore having only a few or even one all round setting can make things much easier for you to keep your hearing aids working their best without you accidently in the wrong program on your hearing aid that you didn't want it to even be on. This is where it is important to chat to the professional programming your hearing aid and if you do have memory difficulties to talk about it with them for your hearing aid to be made as simple to use for your life style. Programs can be written down but if your unlikely to remember about their being extra programs then they will not get used anyway.
You enjoy a quiet lifestyle
If you enjoy a peaceful life where the only background noise tends to be the occasional noisy family member or friend that comes to visit you'll probably find that your hearing aid will perform just as well with just the one main program. Many different programs and settings are designed for different environments that you might encounter and if you generally enjoy a quiet lifestyle then you'll find little use for them.
